Richard Spencer is the president and director of the National Policy Institute and is credited with coining the term "alt-right". The movement is a loosely organised far-right group that espouses white nationalism and has shown strong support for US president-elect Donald Trump. Spencer describes alt-right as "the identity politics for white people in the 21st century". Spencer, 38, rose to prominence after a video surfaced of him shouting "Hail Trump, hail our people, hail victory" at a Washington, DC conference as members of the crowd raised their hands in a Nazi salute. His National Policy Institute is listed as a hate group by the...

Hundreds of torch-wielding white nationalists who are attending Saturday’s Unite the Right rally gathered at the University of Virginia and marched to the Rotunda, chanting, “You will not replace us.” After the march, which began at UVa’s Nameless Field, reached the Rotunda, police later declared an unlawful assembly. Protesters and opponents alike reported being affected by pepper spray. At the feet of a statue of Thomas Jefferson, fights began breaking out and some wielding tiki torches swung them at people. At least one person was arrested, and several people were treated at the scene for minor injuries. Footage filmed by Ford Fischer shows the "Battle of Lee Park" on Saturday. "Just another day in the park," National Socialist leader Matthew Heimbach said before his "Traditionalist Workers Party" participated in a street skirmish with left-wing counter protesters. The battle raged on and spanned many different groups until police pushed the "Unite the Right" rally off their designated area. This inflamed the conflict by pushing both sides together. Several were injured. Police appeared not to have conflicted any individual injuries.
