Cottonmouth and Copperhead Combat

This video was sent to me by citizen scientist Dawn Kelly. The most likely explanation for what we are seeing is male-male combat over a female. It is a stereotypical ritualized behavior. To my knowledge, this is the first evidence of interspecific combat among vipers. We are currently preparing a scientific manuscript describing the event. Some media coverage of this observation: BBC Earth: http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20160928-a-woman-went-for-a-walk-and-saw-a-brand-new-snake-behaviour National Geographic: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2016/09/venomous-vipers-locked-in-mating-duel-different-species-combat/ Live Science: http://www.livescience.com/56125-interspecies-viper-battle-video.html Earth Touch: http://www.earthtouchnews.com/natural-world/animal-behaviour/cottonmouth-vs-copperhead-heres-why-this-unusual-snake-battle-is-one-for-the-books Many people below are suggesting that these are actually two snakes that are mating. This is not what it looks like when snakes mate, this is what it looks like when snakes fight. Want...
