UPDATE 25/10/16: Since making this video, I've discovered the Yonomi app. This can be used to bridge the gap between the Echo and other home automation products for which there is currently no official smart home skill. The great thing about this is that you can create custom routines which are discovered in the Alexa app as smart home devices. Once discovered, you can then control these 'devices' with simple "Alexa, turn on/off the..." commands, instead of "Alexa, tell the *whatever* to turn on/off the..." as is necessary with a custom Alexa skill. I was going to buy a Logitech Harmony and a Smartthings in order to control things like my TV via remote IR blaster. Turns out, using the IR blaster on my phone, I can control my TV (and a lot more) by pairing it directly with my Amazon Echo.
